| Customer Reviews: Mixed bag of greatness July 18, 2010 Mr. P. Marcel (Bordeaux, France) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
There's no doubt that Lee and Kirby created some of the absolutely best Thor moments and the Tales of Asgard featurette which seems to have been initiated by Kirby, is one of those great sequences. It adapts rather faithfully some of the original Norse tales in the legendary Kirby style. But while this collection is a fine idea, one can only recoil in dismay before the over-busy colouring: some guy with a computer has spent time burying Kirby's line (already ill-served by Coletta's unsteady inking) under glitters and haloes and all sorts of bling, probably supposed to bring to it the shiny look of a movie. Because, nowadays, it's all about movies, you know. As a result we lose to fuzzy cosmetics too much of the pleasure of Kirby's artwork. Pity some taste and restraint wasn't used.
Still, the stories themselves are great fun.
Legends Come to Life June 14, 2010 Kenneth D. Cole (Tucson, Arizona; USA) I have been fascinated by Norse Mythology ever since I can remember. I collected Thor comics when I was younger. Sadly they were taken from me. I miss them a lot & not just for the monetary value of them. To me they were priceless. I have never seen a comic book / graphic novel come so close to the legends as Marvel has. They are astoundingly accurate in their treatment of the Norse myths & the Norse gods. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants a good visual telling of the Norse myths. Shoot, I would recommend this book to anyone that just wants to spend some time enjoyably. Maybe, as one of the reviewers stated, they aren't accurate to Mr. Kirby's artwork but that doesn't make them any less enjoyable. I thought the artwork was excellent, especially since they are "re-doing" the originals. The pull-out poster & other artwork at the end of the book are also great reasons to buy this.
Spend some enjoyable time with the greatest of all myths, the Norse gods & especially the God of Thunder, Thor.
Jack 'The King' Kirby lost by awful coloring May 14, 2010 Edwin A. Vazquez (Donald) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I was excited to see this book available but was greatly saddened when viewing the retouched colors. The new colors destroyed the book and I hope to find an original coloring that matched and did not kill J. Kirby's beautiful line art.
Fantastic Edition March 31, 2010 TooDiesel 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
The stories in here are outstanding, and rank with Simonson's and JMS's work as the greatest Thor that Marvel has ever produced. The recoloring is first-rate and revitalizes some of the plain colors in the original stories. The Stan Lee dialogue, while campy at times, largely shaped the voice of the characters for future generations. This is especially true for Volstagg, whose manner of speaking remains largely unchanged. Kirby also shines at times, but I can't help but feel that the inker, Vince Colletta, lessens Kirby's impact in the story. I've seen scans of original pencil pages Kirby has done throughout his career and a lot of the work here seems abbreviated, atypical of the frenetic Kirby pencil washes that can be found in some of his other pencil work. Thankfully, Matt Milla's colors seem to pour some of that lost life back into the artwork.
The construction of the book is outstanding. It is sewn binding, and not the typical gluework that Marvel does for editions this size. Of significant note is the two sided poster of the Olivier Coipel's outstanding collected cover to the Tales of Asgard 2009 reprint series. The poster folds out to a total of six pages. One side reproduces the covers joined together, while the other side reproduces Coipel's pencil work for the joined covers.
